1&2&3&4&Hi-hatSnareKick

Add one part at a time, then play together

What we learn

Coordination
Practise single and double kick placements and move them within the bar. Combine hands and feet, including the kick and hi-hat pedal.
Basic groove
Combine hi-hat, snare and kick. Keep a steady tempo and balance the volume of each part.

In class

  1. Start with the hi-hat and count aloud.
  2. Add the snare, then the kick. If it gets difficult, return to two parts.
  3. Keep the same groove while playing along with a simple backing track.

What to aim for

Play a basic groove continuously, keep time when the kick enters and control the balance of snare and hi-hat.

At homePractise one basic groove and one kick variation separately, then connect them.

Once coordination is steady, change the rhythm and move between drums.
