Count first, then alternate

What we learn

Hand technique
Work on posture, grip and wrist control. Play single strokes and alternate hands, listening for even spacing and volume.
Reading & note values
Learn the drum positions and note symbols. Start with quarter and eighth notes, counting aloud as you read.

In class

  1. Listen to a demonstration, then clap or count along.
  2. Copy it on a practice pad or snare: one hand first, then both.
  3. Read a short line aloud, play it and check it against the score.

What to aim for

Alternate hands to a steady pulse, and read and play simple quarter and eighth notes.

At homePractise alternating strokes slowly and one rhythm from class. Listen for even volume and spacing.

Once the pulse is steady, share the pattern between hands and feet.
