Count first, then alternate
What we learn
- Hand technique
- Work on posture, grip and wrist control. Play single strokes and alternate hands, listening for even spacing and volume.
- Reading & note values
- Learn the drum positions and note symbols. Start with quarter and eighth notes, counting aloud as you read.
In class
- Listen to a demonstration, then clap or count along.
- Copy it on a practice pad or snare: one hand first, then both.
- Read a short line aloud, play it and check it against the score.
What to aim for
Alternate hands to a steady pulse, and read and play simple quarter and eighth notes.
At homePractise alternating strokes slowly and one rhythm from class. Listen for even volume and spacing.
